Hip-Hop Landmark in New York

The State of New York has officially announced its recognition of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the South Bronx as the birthplace of hip-hop and as an eligible historic landmark. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is home to a community room where the father of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc, played in during the 1970s. The site, however, has been closed for renovations since last year, prompting hip-hop and community organizers to make a bid to have the location honored as a landmark. According to the New York State Office, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue “meets the eligibility criteria being that it is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history.”

Hip-hop Meets the Middle East

SAN DIEGO -- An Iraqi-American rap artist is getting headlines for his antiwar song critical of President George Bush and his Iraq War policy, writes Mohamed Kadry in The Arab American News. Tommy Hanna, called “Timz,” generated controversy with the song “Iraq” off his album, “Open for Business.” In interviews with networks like Fox and Al-Jazeera, Hanna has said that he feels the war is destroying the home of his parents. In an interview, Chuck Norris of Fox News asked Hanna if he would have liked to live in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was killing thousands of Iraqis. Hanna responded that the country was relatively safe at that time, whereas today, he said, you can’t walk down the street without fear that a neighbor could kill you. Hanna emphasized that he was born in California, and, contrary to what others have alleged, he is not a terrorist and does not hate America.

Teen pot smokers 15 times more likely to use amphetamines in their 20s

OK, I will admit that I don't think that drinking or smoking in moderation, is a huge deal. As long as you're being considerate of those around you and being responsible (not driving drunk, for example), I figure that you can do with your life what you want. And speaking of smoking, I'm not a marijuana fan but again I think that using it in moderation is probably OK.

Maybe it's because I'm from China where the view on cannabis is much more lax than in the US, but I never really believed the suggestion that pot (along with drinking and smoking cigarettes) is a gateway drug that will lead users to try harder, more dangerous drugs. Apparently I'm going to have to revise my position and eat my words though, as a huge Australian study has shown the exact opposite to be true.

The study, which followed 2000 young people from the State of Victoria in southeastern Oz for 10 years, has shown that teens who smoked cannabis at age 15 were 15 times more likely to use amphetamines in their 20s. The study also says that study participants who began drinking and smoking cigarettes at a young age were more likely to try pot in the first place. Considering the size and length of the study, as well as the pretty huge findings, I'm thinking I may have to change my opinion about what sorts of things are OK in moderation.

Calgary folk festival offers healthy food alternatives

I think Sasquatch and festivals like it should take a hint from the many events starting to provide a much more impressive variety of food options. For example, The Calgary Folk Music Festival's motto is "only the best". A few years ago, organizers realized that many of their artists and volunteers were vegetarian or vegan, and so they began to cater to those who wanted more healthy non-meat, as well meat, options.

Not everything on offer is low-calorie or low-fat, but it's all full of flavor and has a much higher nutritional value than regular festival fare. Visitors can still get hot dogs but they're gourmet, and veggie dogs are also available. Other food choices include everything from sushi to Pad Thai to Caribbean to Indian. Fresh fruit, BBQ, gelato, organic burritos, salads and much more can all be had a pretty reasonable prices too. Even the beer comes from a local brewery rather than a corporation like Budweiser or Molson. Now that's what I call good eating!

Are there any healthy food options available at festivals and fairs near you?

Messi in China

Lionel Messi has travelled to China to participate in a series of promotional events organized by beverage company Pepsi. Rodrigo and Matías, Leo's two brothers, accompany the Argentinian star on the trip. During his stay in China, Messi will visit five cities and take part in different activities with the 3,000 local fans who, through a number of contests, won their chance to spend some time with the Barcelona footballer. It is expected that Messi will fly back to Argentina next Tuesday, and spend the rest of his Summer holiday there. Having taken part in the Copa América, Leo is not required to join the FC Barcelona squad until August 15 -after the team's pre-season Asian tour-, but it is believed that he will restart training for the new season on his own in Barcelona a week earlier.

Smoke

The best places to buy weed are along 17ave SW or Stephen Ave in the downtown core. If you know a buddy in the city it can make things a lil easier. It's always better to go with a local rather then a downtown corner guy. You'll get better counts, better stuff. But it's pretty easy around Stampede time, you can walk just about anywhere downtown and find someone toking away in a park. Or you'll have the guys walk by you selling budz. If you keep your eyes open you can prolly find some locals toking away, but try to avoid asking people around the clubs, as sometimes they can be a litttle testy.
Pretty average prices. 10-g , 60-80-1/4 , 160-200- O If you get stuck buying from runners along 17th or Stephen try to stick to dimebags.
They are mostly BC Bud, although you can find most anything if you put your mind to it and have some resources to work with. However if your just visiting the city, chances are you wont have much of a selection other then hash or weed. Avoid buying off people that also sell hard drugs, they usally have lower quality stuff, and sometimes it can be shake.
Calgary isn't really a place you go just to smoke a lil pot. Although you're probably safe just to walk down any street puffing on a joint, some cops may try to harrass you, or even dump your bag. But as a general rule if you're not bothering anyone, they won't bother you.
